Enjoy Longer Days with Your Pets

Everyone enjoys longer Summer days. The heat, not so much, but the additional daylight is a welcome change from the sun disappearing before you can finish dinner. We’ve talked previously about how to watch out for heat stroke and protecting your pets when the sidewalks are hot. This time, we’ll cover basic care for how and where you take your pets.

What might be the best part of longer days is having plenty of outdoor time with your pets after dinner (aka supper if you grew up where I did). Even if you had time for the gym, there’s nothing like time playing in the backyard or a good walk after eating for you and your family, both the two- and four-legged members. With all kinds of plants blooming, make sure you clean your dog’s paws after every walk. Watch out for excessive paw licking to avoid skin irritation or worse.

Longer days also means road trips! If your dog is going to stay in one spot in the car, you need to put up a removable screen across whichever window the sun shines through to beat down on him or her. This is more important for dogs (and cats, too) than humans. Remember that they do not sweat through their skin, they have to pant and increase blood flow near the skin surface to cool off.

You also need to have a small bowl of water on the floor. It doesn’t need to be a lot, just keep an eye on the level for trips more than an hour or two.

Traveling to a park is fun, but what is better than a day at the beach? Not much when it comes to dogs! The water is fun for everyone. Dogs love to splash as much as toddlers and watching them have the zoomies in the water is so funny, you might hurt yourself laughing!

Before taking your furry friends out, make sure they know how to behave. Nothing ruins the

mood of a fun beach day than a strange dog jumping on people, stealing food, and leaving a mess along the shore. If your dog isn’t fully trained, then keep her safe and on a leash. It may restrict what you can do around others, but the last thing you want is to pay a visit to the veterinarian on what’s supposed to be a fun day.
